With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

    Pin-sharp Picture
    Excellent picture quality from a variety of inputs ---- cable TV, upscaling DVD player. Even home-brewed DVDs from old Hi-8 videotapes are clear and sharp, and home-brewed DVDs from 16:9 digital videotapes are excellent. Don't just take the out-of-the-box default picture settings ---- it's well worth making minor tweaks to the color settings, etc. For improved sound, I've coupled this TV with a Sony Sound Bar Speaker System (HT-CT100). I use inexpensive HDMI cables to input all of the AV signals (e.g., cable TV, DVD player, digital tuner) into the base unit of the Sony System, with a single output HDMI cable from the Sony System to the Samsung TV. The Sony Sound Bar / Active Subwoofer combination gives effective spatial sound dispersion with a solid bass. Only needed tweak: if the Sound Bar sound is not quite in sync with the on-screen image (e.g., of a newscaster), then there is a delay that can be adjusted in the AMP Menu of the Sound Bar.

      I scoured the reviews before making this purchase, so I hope this helps contribute to your decision. I've had the TV for over a month, and I can happily say I haven't had any regrets. It has a beautifully clear image and the glare from the window next to it doesn't interfere much, though a direct reflection gets a little tough to see through.

      One thing I wish I had known before buying it is whether the Samsung AnyNet+ feature would work with the PS3 Slim's Bravia Sync (HDMI-CEC feature). The answer: it can! Though limited, my experimenting led me to these button correlations:
      TV Arrow keys --> PS3 D-pad
      Center/Enter --> X
      Exit --> O
      FF/RW --> R2/L2

      Another neat HDMI CEC feature is that when I turn on the PS3, the TV automatically turns on and switches to that input, saving a couple button presses on the remote. Though when the PS3 is turned off, the TV defaults to the TV coax input, instead of switching back to HDMI 1 (my cable box). Turning off the TV turns off the PS3, but only if it's idle from what i can tell. The input switching ONLY works for HDMI CEC compatible devices, unfortunately.

      I just set up the Panasonic SC HT230 5.1 speaker system with the TV and I learned the difference between HDMI 1.3 and 1.4: 1.4 allows for an Audio Return Channel (ARC), which may have enabled my TV's remote to control my volume (it does connect through Anynet/Viera link for playing dvds and blu rays). Without this feature, it's not seamless but it does the job.

      The Internet@TV feature is pretty nifty, though I can't say I plan on using it for more than Pandora streaming. It's important to not that the Netflix app does NOT come with this TV. After a bit of research and finally calling their 1-800 number, I've confirmed that the LN46B TV is the 2009 model that comes with "widgets" but if you want the "apps" then you need to buy the 2010 LN46C model. There is no Netflix 'widget,' just a Netflix 'app,' and the nice customer service representative confirmed that there will not be a firmware update to unlock this functionality.

      Also notable is that the TV's menu navigation is a bit sluggish out of the box. Mine was shipped with firmware version 1016 but once plugging it into the internet and updating to 1018, the navigation has become much more responsive.

      Cons:
      - Netflix app is not compatible
      - Automatic input switching only works for HDMI-CEC devices
      - Does not support HDMI 1.4 (ARC compatibility)

      If you can justify paying for another TV that has the three features above, it may be worth considering if it matters to you. If you're looking for a great TV with a handful of neat, albeit minimal utility bonus features, this is the one. My final conclusion is that the high quality of this TV shadows the few negatives and it was a great purchase for me. I hope this rather lengthy review helped your decision, and good luck with your HDTV search!

      I love this TV. I was worried about how long it would last. I am hoping for 5 years at least. So far it looks to be on it's way to 2 years in January and hopefully that's not even the half way point in it's lifespan!

      Beautiful picture!

      EDIT 2016: JUST as it was about to hit the 6 year mark it exploded. No, like literally. A very loud, scary POP happened while my family and I were watching a show and the TV lost all power / never turned on again. RIP TV.

      I bought this TV in May of 2009. Just a little over a week ago, all of these lines appeared on the TV. They covered the entire picture and even though the picture was being displayed behind it, you could not get rid of the lines. I tried different inputs thinking (hoping)it was just that input, but unfortunately that was not the case. I called Samsung support, they had me try one other thing and the lines were still there. At this point all they said was "yes, it does appear your TV needs to be serviced but I see you are out of warranty."

      Great, I spent over $1500 to buy Samsung because I thought they were a "good TV", but all I got was two years out of the unit! To make matters worse, when I called around to see about having it repaired, the TV shop told me it was a "jungle board", that it would cost anywhere from $400-$800 to fix it, but the part was on back-order and Samsung would not give them any ETA as to when they could expect it! Unbelievable! So now I have a $1500 paper weight, just perfect :(

      FYI to anyone considering buying a Samsung Television, DON'T DO IT!!!

      Don't read between the lines. Every description from Samsung, provides vague feature representations. Often misleading you to believe that a feature that you desire is provided. If the description doesn't say it, then don't assume that Samsung provides it. The TOC is misrepresented. Most people won't even be able to see it. NETFLIX IS NOT AVAILABLE. MEDIA IS NOT ABLE TO STREAM FROM YOUR COMPUTER LIKE THEY SAY. Sumsung provides horrible customer service and once your TV becomes 6 months old, then you are treated like you have the plague. I did a lot of research before buying; read a lot of reviews, but what I should have searched through is the 100s of forums that have 1000s of complaints about this model (and many other models) and sucky Samsung. Some Samsung firmware updates actually remove features from your TV!! One day you have a really cool feature and after an update, IT'S NOT THERE!!! WTF!!!

      TV internet interface is horribly slow!!! This feature should boot itself once the TV is powered on, but instead waits until you access it...and then you have to wait. and wait. and wait....did I say you have to wait? And it's not my connection. I have a gigabit router, and CAT6 cable connected directly to the TVs Ethernet port. ALL OTHER DEVICES USING THE NETWORK HAVE NO ISSUES. The Blockbuster and Amazon VOD works flawlessly...so WHY NO NETFLIX?

      The TV itself is what I expected when I purchased this overpriced HDTV.
      It does allow you to watch video via USB, in many different formats, which I really dig.

    Connections A wide variety of multimedia devices can be connected to the set through any one of the four HDMI 1.3 inputs (including one on the side), and the handy Anynet+ feature (HDMI-CEC) lets you control all your CEC-enabled peripherals--such as a DVD or Blu-ray player--using just one remote. Connect HD digital devices like disc players, game consoles, and satellite dish components into the two rear connections and use the side-mounted input for cameras, camcorders, and laptops.
